LIST OF RECOGNISED STOCK EXCHANGES
Power of the Central Government.‑ The
Central Government may notify any stock exchange as recognised stock exchange
for purposes of the Companies Act, 1956.
The power of the Central
Government to recognise a stock exchange has been delegated to and is
exercisable by SEBI. [Press Note, dated 13‑9‑1994 issued by the
Department of Economic Affairs].
In supersession of earlier
notifications, Government has notified a fresh list of stock exchanges as per
new Notification No. GSR 1060(E), dated 21‑12‑1989 : (1990) 67 Com
Cases 341 (St.). "In pursuance of clause (39) of section 2 of the
Companies Act, 1956 (1 of 1956), and in supersession of the notifications of
the Government of India in the late Ministry of Law (Department of Company
Affairs) G.S.R. No. 466, dated 21st
March, 1966, and G.S.R. No. 1157,
dated 16th July, 1966, on the subject, the Company Law Board hereby notifies,
for the purposes of the provisions of clause (b) of sub‑section (5) of
section 56, section 73, sub‑sections (1A) and (1B) of section 108, clause
(c) of sub‑section (1) of section 149, sub‑section (1) of section
161, clause (iv) of proviso (b) to sub‑section (1) of section 219 and sub‑section
(5) of section 603 of the Companies Act, 1956, and clause 8 of Part III of
Schedule VI to the said Act, the following stock exchanges as recognised stock
exchanges, namely:

The Central
Government will not allow new companies to use the words 'stock exchange' as
part of their name unless SEBI has given in‑principle approval or 'No
Objection'. This is to ensure that investors are not misled by such names into
dealing with members of unrecognised stock exchanges. Vide SEBI's Letter, dated
18‑3‑1996 to Department of Company Affairs and Circular No. 3/96,
dated 12‑4‑1996 issued by the Department.

25. Recognition to Inter‑connected Stock Exchange of India
Ltd.
Securities and Exchange Board of India, has granted
recognition to Inter‑Connected Stock Exchange of India Ltd., Mumbai
(ICSI). ICSI will be the 23rd Stock Exchange in India. ICSI has been promoted
by 14 regional stock exchanges. ICSI will set‑up an inter‑connected
market system and will provide its trading members a facility to trade on the
national market in addition to the trading facility at the regional stock
exchanges. The trading members are required to satisfy the capital adequacy as
prescribed by SEBI. Further, each of the participating regional stock exchange
is to .follow uniform trading and settlement cycle in tune with the trading and
settlement cycle of the ICSE. ICSE will also establish a Settlement Guarantee
